Phonics – Short, Easy Lessons for Every Situation!

There are so many good programs to choose from like Abeka, Bob Jones, Sing-Spell-Read and Write, or 100 Easy Lessons, but do you need something not so teacher directed? Simply Phonics is SIMPLY that SIMPLE! Just sit down and cuddle up to these short, easy lessons.  I used created this program for and used it with my youngest two children who are now in college.

It seems many either contain too many bells and whistles or our children bore with them too easily. Simply Phonics has addressed these issues. Print our free sample lessons to see how!

Simply Phonics is a Complete Course!

Simply Phonics is broken down into three levels, much like kindergarten, first grade, and second grade.  However, you could probably start from the beginning as a review no matter where your child is it in learning phonics.

It is full of pages of delightful pictures and stories to make learning to read a breeze -- and fun! It is for anyone of any age whose parent or self desires a firm foundation in phonics as an aid in learning to read and spell.  It is a proven system which ensures rapid progress. As the student gains aptness in the mastery of words, an enjoyment of learning will begin to develop.

The very first word a child learns to read is "Mom," only needing the "m" and the "o".

Take your time in teaching.  A foundation is laid when the work in this book is done well. Whether the child advances rapidly or slower than you would like, the child's ability should be what sets the pace.

Over 100 Illustrations. With large, easy to read text, the "Simply Phonics" publication is simply a must-have for any home schooler beginning the first steps in understanding our written language. No teacher's manual needed. Complete Instructions Included!

Here is a detailed review:

Like the rest of the Simply series, Simply Phonics is presented as PDF file for easy printing as needed.  The beginning pages familiarize the reader with Laurie’s approach to phonics as well as a short introduction on how to use the book.  The program then immediately jumps into the meat of the program, which consists of a four-page pictorial alphabet lessons to be done at the child’s own pace.  She concludes with a short phonics rule section and some general suggestions for teaching.

While Simply Phonics begins traditionally with the teaching of individual letter sounds the child also begins blending those sounds together in lesson two and the very first three-letter word – mom - is introduced by lesson eight.  What a wonderful first word for any child to read.  Each lesson begins with a single letter sound and a beautiful black and white photocopied picture.  To reinforce the sound a short story or passage is read to the child and questions are asked about the photo.  All lessons are done orally therefore no writing is necessary however; there are letters, words and passages at the end of each lesson for parents who wish to use this as a beginning handwriting course as well.

No additional materials are needed to complete this program though a phonics CD such as Twin Sisters Phonics and Twin Sisters Advanced Phonics might be a welcome review for children who enjoy music or who are primarily auditory learners.

In my opinion, Simply Phonics is a breath of fresh air to the Charlotte Mason homeschool community.  It provides a clear and concise road to reading beginning with the simplest of letter sounds and moving straight through to reading complex paragraphs.
